  1. Break up with your stuff.
    It may not sound easy, but start simply and take baby steps, you could find yourself not only making progress with your clutter, but actually enjoying the changes you’ll soon see. To begin, make a checklist of all the supplies you’ll need, like labels, storage, trash bags, and price tags. Start with the least overwhelming room, take your time, and linger in the nostalgia as you revisit your old memories. Some items will be easy to part with.   2. Bring the outside, inside.

It could be something a simple as a decorative pillow, or as grand as a full accent wall. Just remember that your goal is relaxing decor, so go for tranquil, subdued colors that aren’t too jarring.
  3. Let the sunshine in.
    Natural light can do wonders for your state of mind. Open the blinds, open the doors, pull the drapes to the side. If there’s a lovely breeze, crank open the windows, too. Take a deep breath of fresh air and soak in the Vitamin D. And if you have the space, create a true outdoor sanctuary that’s filled with live plants, babbling water features, and bird feeders. Choose plants native to your area and be sure you have shade for those hot summer days.
  4. Be prepared.
    Have items that you need for true relaxation close at hand  — nothing kills the mood of settling in for a good book like having to hunt for your reading glasses. Store blankets near all of your favorite lounging spots. Always put the remote back in the same spot. Keep a reading light next to your bed. Take a few minutes to jot down all the things that help you feel relaxed, then give them a permanent home within arm’s reach.
  5. Love your whole home.
    Take a minute to just sit in each room of your house and observe it. What do you love? What do you not love? And what could you do  — even if just one little thing — to make it more relaxing? Maybe it’s splurging on high thread-count sheets for your bedroom. Or moving those storage bins out of the laundry room. Or even finally buying that new microwave that matches the rest of your appliances. Sometimes the smallest things can make a huge difference in turning a stressful house into a relaxing hideaway.
