When a friend or family member moves into a new home, it’s customary to bring them a housewarming gift. You can head to a nearby gift shop and look for random gifts they might like, and there’s always the standard bottle of wine, but we think it’s more fun to get creative. Check out these 10 thoughtful and unique housewarming party gifts they’ll love (and actually use!).
1. Art or wall decor
We often find that hanging pictures and other wall decorations is one of the last things people get to after moving in. Often, they spend weeks or longer with blank walls. However, when we help families unpack and get settled into their new home, we make hanging art or photos a priority because it’s a surefire way to make a new space feel like home, fast. Help your friend or family member bring their space to life, with a print from their favorite artist or an inspirational quote.
2. Recipe in a jar
Pinterest is in love with this idea, and they will be, too! Find a yummy recipe, mix all of the dry ingredients together in a mason jar, and decorate it. Then, print out the full recipe so they’ll know what else they need to add.
3. Homemade meals
Bake a giant tray of lasagna, or slow-cook some delicious BBQ pork. Meals that are easy to freeze and easy to prepare, are a great way give them a break from the day-to-day so they can focus on getting settled. (And, if you love this idea but aren’t a cook, stocking their freezer with easy meals is perfectly okay, too!)
4. A day off
Give them the gift of a break from all the work. Movie or theater tickets, a gift card to their favorite restaurant or a new one in the neighborhood, or massage gift certificates are all great ways to help them take a load off. If they have young kids, offer yourself up as a free babysitter and take the kids out for a while.
5. Gift cards
While gift cards might seem impersonal, just think back to the last time you moved and how many trips to the hardware store it involved. And when you consider the expenses of moving, giving them a little extra cash for tools, decor or even groceries is both practical and thoughtful.
6. Homesick candles
Especially for family or friends who’ve moved a long way, a homesick candle is a sentimental way to bring a bit of the old into the new. Each state has its own scent to help them feel at home in their new state while they adjust to the change.
7. A basket of essentials
Help them stock up on all the household essentials that they may have thrown out during the move. Batteries. Tape. Glue. Picture hangers. Light bulbs. Plastic hooks. Dishwasher and laundry detergent. To make it a bit more fun, bundle it all in a brand-new laundry basket and throw in a few surprises, like a good book or their favorite sweet treat.
8. Personalized welcome mat
First impressions are everything, and nothing says welcome home like a new welcome mat. It’s also likely to be one of those items on the new homeowners’ “to do, at some point” list. Make it personal with a monogram or design it to reflect their decor and personality.
Succulents are the perfect gift if you want to bring a live plant inside, because they’re adorable and oh-so-low-maintenance. They bring life to any room, and the best part? They only need a spritz of water once a week or so. And when you’re in the middle of unpacking and organizing a new house, that’s a huge bonus.
10. A professional organizer
Hire an organization pro to help them find the perfect new homes for all their things. Especially if they’ve downsized, avoiding clutter from the get-go is the gift that keeps on giving. You can even start before their move is complete by hiring them a move concierge to help with everything from staging their old place to decorating the new.
